Air Fryer Eggs en Cocotte (Baked Eggs in Ramekins)
Introduction
“Œufs en Cocotte” is a traditional French dish where eggs are gently baked in ramekins with cream and flavorful add-ins like cheese, herbs, or even sautéed vegetables. Normally made in a water bath in the oven, the air fryer simplifies the process and delivers beautifully set whites and rich, velvety yolks. This method is quicker, mess-free, and perfect for one or two servings.
Ingredients (Serves 2)
2 large eggs
2 tbsp heavy cream (or crème fraîche)
2 tsp grated Parmesan or Gruyère cheese (optional)
Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
Butter or nonstick spray, for greasing ramekins
Optional Add-ins (use about 1 tbsp per ramekin):
Finely chopped cooked spinach or kale
Sautéed mushrooms
Diced ham or smoked salmon
Chopped tomatoes or caramelized onions
Fresh herbs (parsley, thyme, or chives)
Tools Needed
2 small ramekins (4 oz or 6 oz)
Air fryer
Instructions
Prep the Ramekins
Lightly butter or spray each ramekin.
Add 1 tbsp cream to the bottom of each.
Add any optional fillings (pre-cooked if needed) and sprinkle a little cheese if using.
Add the Eggs
Crack 1 egg into each ramekin, taking care not to break the yolk.
Add another ½ tbsp of cream on top of each egg.
Season with salt and pepper.
Preheat the Air Fryer
Preheat your air fryer to 300°F (150°C) for 3–5 minutes.
Cook the Eggs
Place ramekins in the air fryer basket.
Air fry at 300°F (150°C) for 9–12 minutes, depending on how runny you like the yolks:
9–10 minutes: Set whites, runny yolks (soft)
11–12 minutes: More set yolks (medium)
Tip: The eggs will continue to cook slightly after removal, so pull them when they look just barely set.
Serve
Remove ramekins carefully using tongs or oven mitts.
Let cool for 1–2 minutes, then serve with toast, baguette slices, or a side salad.
