Air fryer onion fritters are a healthier alternative to traditional deep-fried versions, with a crispy exterior and tender interior using minimal oil. They make perfect appetizers and snacks for any occasion.
Ingredients
- 2 – 3 large onions sliced thin
- ¼ cup chickpea flour
- 1 tsp ginger garlic paste substitute – garlic powder
- 1 tsp coriander powder
- 1 tsp paprika or chili powder
- ¼ tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp salt
- 5 tbsp water or as required to mix
Instructions
- Slice onions and keep them in a mixing bowl. Add a tsp salt and gently mix it with onion slices (preferably by hand). Let it sit for 10 minutes to release the moisture.
- After 10 minutes, check that the onions have released some moisture. Don’t remove that.
- Add chickpea flour, rice flour, and spices to the bowl. Drizzle 1 tsp olive oil and mix thoroughly.
- Add water gradually. It may take 4 – 5 tbsp water to make the batter of the right consistency. A too-thin consistency won’t hold shape in the air fryer. The onion mixture should be thick enough.
- Preheat the air fryer to 400 F for 3 – 4 minutes. Grease the basket or use a silicon mat for this recipe to avoid sticking of the fritters.
- Take a spoonful of mixture and place it in the air fryer. Arrange them in a single layer.
- Spray or brush them with oil.
- Air fry them for 10 minutes at 350 F or 175 C. Then, increase the temperature to 400 F (200 C) and air fry for 5 – 6 minutes more.
- Flip them halfway through and spray a little oil on them.
- Remove when the fritters turn crispy and golden.
- Serve hot with cilantro dip or any of your favorite dip.
