Introduction:

Popcorn in the air fryer is a quick and fun way to enjoy a light, crispy snack without the need for a stovetop or microwave. With just a few basic ingredients and no added chemicals, you can make fresh popcorn in under 15 minutes. This method works best with a basket-style air fryer and a little bit of experimentation for perfect popping.

Prep Time: 2 minutes

Cook Time: 8–10 minutes

Total Time: ~12 minutes

Servings: 2

Ingredients:

1/4 cup popcorn kernels (do not use microwave popcorn)

1 tsp oil (optional, but helps prevent burning — use avocado, canola, or coconut oil)

Salt or seasoning to taste

Aluminum foil or a silicone liner (optional but highly recommended to prevent kernels from falling through)

Instructions:

Preheat Your Air Fryer

Preheat the air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for 5 minutes.

Prepare the Basket

Line the bottom of the air fryer basket with a small piece of aluminum foil, creating a shallow bowl shape.

Do not cover the entire basket or block airflow. Just enough to hold the kernels.

Add Kernels

Add 1/4 cup of popcorn kernels to the foil.

Drizzle with 1 tsp of oil if using and stir to coat evenly.

Air Fry

Air fry at 400°F (200°C) for 8–10 minutes.

Start with 8 minutes, checking halfway through.

Listen carefully — when the popping slows to 1 pop every 2–3 seconds, it’s done.

Season and Serve

Carefully remove the basket (it will be hot).

Transfer popcorn to a bowl and season immediately with salt, melted butter, or your favorite seasoning (like paprika, nutritional yeast, cinnamon sugar, etc.).

Tips for Success:

Don’t overfill the basket — 1/4 cup is plenty. More can overcrowd and result in uneven popping.

Some kernels may not pop, and that’s okay with air frying.

If your air fryer lid is clear or see-through, watch for burning.

For spicy popcorn, toss with chili powder and lime zest after cooking.

Flavor Variations:

Cheesy: Sprinkle with parmesan or nutritional yeast.

Sweet: Toss with cinnamon and a little sugar.

Savory: Garlic powder, paprika, or ranch seasoning.
