Casserole of a Poor Man’s Husband

Casserole of a Poor Man’s Husband

Components:

  1. One pound of ground beef
  2. One medium onion, chopped
  3. Four to five medium potatoes, peeled and sliced thinly
  4. One can (10.5 oz) of cream of chicken soup or cream of mushroom soup
  5. Half a cup of milk
  6. One teaspoon of powdered garlic
  7. One teaspoon of powdered onion
  8. To taste, add salt and pepper.
  9. One and a half cups of shredded cheese, either cheddar or a blend of cheeses
  10. One tablespoon of butter or olive oil (to grease the pan)
  11. One cup of frozen peas or mixed vegetables is optional, but it adds taste and color.

Directions:

  • Set the oven’s temperature to 175°C (350°F). Butter or olive oil can be used to grease a 9 x 13-inch casserole dish.
  • sauté the ground beef: Put the ground beef and chopped onion in a big skillet and sauté over medium heat until the beef is browned and the onion is tender. Empty any extra oil. Add salt, pepper, onion powder, and garlic powder to the beef. Mix thoroughly to incorporate.
  • To make the creamy sauce, combine the milk and cream of mushroom soup in a another bowl and whisk until smooth. You can now whisk any additional vegetables, such as peas or mixed vegetables, into the soup mixture.

Put the casserole together:

  • In the bottom of the prepared casserole dish, arrange half of the sliced potatoes.
  • Cover the potatoes with half of the cooked ground beef mixture.

Cover the beef layer with half of the soup mixture.

  • Put another layer of potatoes on top, followed by the remaining meat mixture and, lastly, the remaining soup mixture.
  • Bake: For approximately an hour, bake the casserole dish tightly covered with aluminum foil. To enable the top to brown and the potatoes to soften, take off the foil after an hour and continue baking for another 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Add the cheese: Top the dish with the shredded cheese when it has finished cooking and the potatoes are soft. Put the dish back in the oven and bake it for a further five to ten minutes, or until the cheese is bubbling and melted.
  • Serve: Before serving, let the dish settle for a few minutes. This recipe goes well with a simple salad or steamed veggies, but it’s substantial enough to be a meal on its own.

Advice:

  • Potato substitutes: You can use canned potatoes or frozen hash browns if you’re pressed for time or don’t have any fresh potatoes.
  • Cheese options: You can use any type of cheese, such as mozzarella, cheddar, or a combination of the two. For even more cheesy pleasure, you can top it with additional cheese in the final ten minutes of baking.
  • Add vegetables: Try layering frozen peas, corn, or carrots with the potatoes or incorporating them with the meat mixture if you want to covertly include some vegetables.
  • Add some chili flakes, spicy sauce, or chopped jalapeños to the ground beef while it’s cooking to add a little heat.

Why It’s Excellent:

  • Budget-friendly: This dish is perfect for feeding a family on a tight budget because it employs easy-to-find, inexpensive, and basic ingredients.
  • Hearty and filling: Packed with carbohydrates and protein, this casserole is a hearty supper that will keep everyone content.
  • Easy and adaptable: You may change or add ingredients to suit your tastes, such as using a different kind of soup, adding different vegetables, or replacing ground turkey with beef.
