Components:
Regarding the crust:
- One box of yellow cake mix (approximately 15.25 ounces)
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) melted unsalted butter
- One egg
Regarding the filling:
- One can, or roughly 21 ounces filling for cherry pie
- 1/4 cup of sugar
- One tablespoon of cornstarch
- 1/4 teaspoon of optional almond extract (for added flavor)
Regarding the garnish:
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) softened unsalted butter
- One cup of all-purpose flour
- Half a cup of sugar
- One-fourth teaspoon of salt
Directions:
Warm up the oven:
- Set the oven temperature to 175°C (350°F). Line a 9 x 13-inch baking dish with parchment paper or grease it.
Get the crust ready:
- Put the egg, melted butter, and cake mix in a big basin. Mix thoroughly.
- To create the crust, uniformly press the ingredients into the bottom of the baking dish that has been prepared.
Prepare the cherry filling:
- Put the sugar, cornstarch, cherry pie filling, and almond extract (if using) in a medium pot. Mix to blend.
- Stirring often, cook over medium heat until the mixture thickens, about 3–4 minutes. Take off the heat once it has thickened.
Put the cherry bars together:
- Evenly cover the crust layer with the cherry filling.
- To make the topping, combine the flour, sugar, salt, and softened butter in a small bowl.
- Mix until a crumbly consistency is achieved.
- Over the cherry filling, evenly distribute the crushed topping.
Bake:
- Bake for 30 to 35 minutes in a preheated oven, or until the mixture is bubbling and the topping is golden brown.
After cooling, serve:
- Cut the cherry bars into squares after they have cooled completely. The filling can correctly set as a result.
- Make a delicious dessert for every occasion!
Advice:
- Variations: For a different taste, you can use various fruit pie fillings, including strawberry, apple, or blueberry, for the cherry pie filling.
- Top Picks: Before serving, you can add a little powdered sugar on top for texture, or you can pour a simple glaze of powdered sugar and milk over it.
- Storage: Keep any remaining cherry bars in the refrigerator for up to a week or at room temperature for up to three to four days in an airtight container.
These easy-to-make Cherry Bars have a delicious blend of crumbly topping, sweet cherry filling, and buttery crust. Have fun!
