Frikkadels are flavorful, juicy meatballs popular in South Africa. Unlike traditional meatballs, these are pan-fried or baked and often served with mashed potatoes, vegetables, or a rich tomato sauce. They have a perfect balance of spices and tenderness, making them a comforting and hearty dish.

Total Time: 35 minutes

Servings: 4-6

Ingredients:

For the Frikkadels:

1 lb (450g) ground beef (or a mix of beef and pork)

½ cup bread crumbs (or 1 slice bread, soaked in milk)

1 egg, beaten

1 small onion, finely chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

1 tsp mustard powder (or 1 tbsp Dijon mustard)

1 tsp paprika

1 tsp dried thyme

½ tsp ground coriander

½ tsp salt

½ tsp black pepper

2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped

2 tbsp milk (if using dry breadcrumbs)

For Frying:

2 tbsp oil (vegetable or olive oil)

Instructions:

Prepare the Mixture

In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, beaten egg, onion, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, paprika, thyme, coriander, salt, pepper, and parsley.

If using dry breadcrumbs, add 2 tbsp milk to keep the frikadels moist.

Mix everything well using your hands until just combined—don’t overmix.

 Shape the Frikkadels

Form the mixture into medium-sized balls (about 1½ inches in diameter) and flatten slightly into thick patties.

Place them on a plate and let them rest in the fridge for 10 minutes (optional but helps them hold their shape).

Cook the Frikkadels

Option 1: Pan-Fried Method

Heat 2 tbsp oil in a skillet over medium heat.

Cook the frikkadels for 4-5 minutes per side, until golden brown and cooked through (internal temp 160°F/71°C).

Option 2: Baked Method

Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).

Place frikkadels on a greased baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes, flipping halfway through.

 Serve & Enjoy

Serve warm with mashed potatoes, rice, or steamed veggies.

Optional: Serve with gravy, tomato sauce, or chutney.

Tips & Tricks:

Don’t Overmix – Overworking the meat can make the frikkadels tough.

Soften the Onions – If you want a milder onion flavor, sauté the onions before mixing.

Make-Ahead Friendly – Shape the patties and store them in the fridge for up to 24 hours before cooking.

Freeze for Later – Freeze uncooked frikkadels on a baking sheet, then transfer to a freezer bag for up to 3 months.
