Coffee with date seeds (natural energy drink)
Overview
Date seeds are often thrown out, but they are actually a great source of nutrients, fiber, and antioxidants. These seeds, when crushed and roasted, yield a rich, fragrant beverage that is entirely caffeine-free but tastes like coffee. Without the jitters of coffee, it’s a great natural way to improve digestion, detoxify your system, and increase your energy levels.
Ingredients
Seeds from dates 20–25
Two cups of water (for making tea)
Extras that are optional:
Half a teaspoon of powdered cinnamon (for flavor)
One teaspoon of date syrup or honey (for sweetness)
A dash of cardamom or vanilla (optional for scent)
Directions
Take Out and Wash the Seeds
To get rid of the sticky date flesh, properly wash the seeds from the dates.
Allow them to air dry in the sun or with a fan.
Heat the seeds.
The dry seeds should be put on a baking tray.
Roast in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for 30–40 minutes or until they are dark brown and aromatic.
(An alternative is to roast them in a skillet over low heat, stirring frequently to prevent scorching.)
Chill and grind
After allowing the roasted seeds to cool, use a coffee grinder or high-speed blender to ground them into a fine powder.
Brew the Coffee
Make two cups of water a boil.
Add one spoonful of the powdered ground date seeds.
Simmer for five to ten minutes.
After straining, serve hot.
Optional: To improve the flavor, add cinnamon or honey.
Advice
The roasted seeds or powder can be kept for up to three months in an airtight jar.
Roast the seeds until they are nearly black for a more intense flavor.
For a smoother brew, use a Turkish coffee pot or French press.
To achieve a richness similar to coffee, try blending with chicory root powder.
