Soft • Fluffy • Classic Yeast Bread
There’s nothing quite like the smell of freshly baked homemade bread filling your kitchen. This easy yeast bread recipe is perfect for beginners and experienced bakers alike. With simple pantry ingredients and clear steps, you’ll get a soft, fluffy loaf with a golden crust—perfect for sandwiches, toast, or enjoying warm with butter.
Ingredients
3½ to 4 cups all-purpose flour
1 packet (2¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
1½ teaspoons salt
1 tablespoon sugar
1¼ cups warm water (110°F / 45°C)
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
Optional: 1 tablespoon honey or olive oil for extra flavor and moisture
Instructions
Step 1: Activate the Yeast
In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Stir gently and let the mixture rest for about 5 minutes. When the yeast is active, it will turn foamy and bubbly. If this doesn’t happen, the yeast may be expired or the water temperature may be incorrect—start again with fresh yeast and properly warmed water.
Step 2: Mix the Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together 3½ cups of flour and the salt. Make a well in the center of the flour to help evenly incorporate the wet ingredients.
Step 3: Combine and Knead
Pour the yeast mixture into the well, then add the softened butter and optional honey or olive oil. Mix with a wooden spoon or clean hands until a shaggy dough forms. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for 5–7 minutes until smooth, elastic, and slightly springy. Add small amounts of flour as needed if the dough feels sticky.
First Rise
Lightly oil a large bowl and place the dough inside, turning once to coat. Cover with a damp towel or plastic wrap and let rise in a warm, draft-free spot for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
Second Rise and Bake
Punch down the dough, shape into a loaf, and place it into a greased 9×5-inch loaf pan. Cover and let rise for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and bake for 25–30 minutes, until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped.
Cool and Serve
Cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack. Let cool completely before slicing for best texture.
🍞 Tip: Store at room temperature for up to 3 days, or freeze for longer freshness.
