Italian Meatball Recipe

Ingredients:

For the Meatballs:

  • 1 lb ground beef (or a mix of beef and pork for extra flavor)
  • 1/2 lb ground pork (optional, for a mix of meats)
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 tbsp fresh basil, chopped
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes (optional, for a little heat)
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream (for moisture; optional)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil (for frying)

For the Sauce (optional but recommended):

  • 2 cups crushed tomatoes (or tomato puree)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp fresh basil or parsley, chopped (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Make the Meatballs:
    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef and ground pork (if using). Add the grated Parmesan, eggs, garlic, parsley, basil, salt, pepper, oregano, red pepper flakes (if using), and heavy cream. Mix gently using your hands until all ingredients are fully incorporated.
    • Form the mixture into meatballs about 1 1/2 inches in diameter. You should have approximately 18-20 meatballs.
  2. Cook the Meatballs:
    • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Once hot, carefully add the meatballs, making sure not to overcrowd the pan.
    • Cook the meatballs in batches if necessary, turning them occasionally, until they are golden brown on all sides and cooked through (about 8-10 minutes). Use a meat thermometer to ensure they reach an internal temperature of 160°F.
  3. Make the Sauce (optional):
    • While the meatballs are cooking, prepare the sauce. In a separate saucepan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the garlic and sauté for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
    • Add the crushed tomatoes, oregano, salt, and pepper, stirring to combine. Let the sauce simmer for 10-15 minutes, then add fresh basil or parsley if desired.
  4. Serve:
    • Once the meatballs are cooked, transfer them to the sauce and simmer for an additional 10 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
    • Serve the meatballs with the sauce, garnished with extra Parmesan cheese and fresh herbs.
