PANELS FOR MILK
Components:
- 480ml, or two cups, of whole milk
- 120ml, or half a cup, of sweetened condensed milk
- 50g, or 1/4 cup, of granulated sugar
- 30g or 1/4 cup cornstarch
- 5ml (1 tsp) vanilla extract
- 1.25g or 1/4 tsp salt
- 60g, or half a cup, of powdered milk (optional; adds depth of taste)
- 30g (2 tablespoons) unsalted butter
- 1/4 cup (30g) crushed nuts or toasted coconut flakes as a garnish (optional)
Directions:
Get the milk mixture ready.
- Add the granulated sugar, sweetened condensed milk, and whole milk to a medium pot.
- Stirring occasionally, cook over medium heat until the mixture is warm and the sugar has dissolved.
Make the mixture thicker:
- Make a slurry out of the cornstarch and a few tablespoons of cold milk in a small bowl.
- To avoid lumps, swirl the slurry into the warm milk mixture gradually while stirring continuously.
- Keep cooking the mixture over medium heat, stirring frequently, until it thickens, which should take five to seven minutes.
Taste the Blend:
- Take the pot off of the burner after it has thickened.
- Add the butter, salt, vanilla essence, and powdered milk (if using) and stir until thoroughly mixed.
Form the Panels:
- Spread the thickened milk mixture evenly to create a flat layer in a square or rectangle baking dish.
- After letting it cool a little, place it in the refrigerator to set completely, which should take at least two hours.
Slice and Present:
- Cut the mixture into “panels” that are square or rectangular once it has solidified.
- Before serving, you can add crushed nuts or toasted coconut flakes as a garnish.
