Salisbury Steak with Garlic Mashed Potatoes & Mushroom-Onion Gravy

Ingredients:
For the Salisbury Steak Patties:
1 lb (450g) ground beef (80/20)
1 egg
⅓ cup breadcrumbs
1 tbsp ketchup
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp Dijon mustard
½ tsp onion powder
½ tsp garlic powder
Salt & pepper, to taste
1 tbsp olive oil (for frying)
For the Mushroom & Onion Gravy:
1 tbsp butter
1 tbsp olive oil
1 small onion, thinly sliced
1 cup mushrooms, sliced (white or cremini)
1 tbsp flour
2 cups beef broth (low sodium preferred)
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
Salt & pepper to taste
Optional: splash of cream or dash of thyme for extra depth
For the Garlic Mashed Potatoes:
2 lbs (900g) potatoes (Yukon Gold or Russet), peeled and chopped
4 cloves garlic, peeled
½ cup milk (warm)
¼ cup unsalted butter
Salt & pepper to taste
Optional: splash of cream or sour cream for creamier texture
- Instructions:
- Make the Garlic Mashed Potatoes:
- In a large pot, add potatoes and garlic cloves, cover with cold salted water.
- Bring to a boil and cook until tender (12–15 minutes).
- Drain and mash with butter, warm milk, salt, and pepper.
- Mix until smooth. Keep warm.
- Prepare the Salisbury Steak Patties:
- In a bowl, mix ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
- Form into 4 oval patties.
- Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat.
- Sear patties for 3–4 minutes per side until browned (they’ll finish cooking in gravy).
- Remove from pan and set aside.
- Make the Mushroom & Onion Gravy:
- In the same pan, add butter and olive oil.
- Sauté onions for 2 minutes, then add mushrooms. Cook until browned (5–7 minutes).
- Sprinkle flour over veggies, stir and cook for 1 minute.
- Slowly whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, scraping up any brown bits.
- Bring to a simmer. Season with salt, pepper, and optional thyme or cream.
- Add patties back into the gravy, cover, and simmer for 10–12 minutes until patties are fully cooked and sauce thickens.
- To Serve:
- Scoop a generous mound of garlic mashed potatoes on each plate. Top with a Salisbury steak patty and ladle over the rich mushroom-onion gravy.
