Stovetop Bread Without an Oven
Components:
- Two cups of all-purpose flour
- One spoonful of baking powder
- Half a teaspoon of salt
- One tablespoon of optional sugar
- 3/4 cup water or milk
- Two teaspoons of melted butter or olive oil
Directions:
Combine the dry ingredients:
- Mix the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar (if using) in a large bowl. Mix thoroughly by whisking.
Add the moist ingredients:
- To the dry ingredients, add the milk and olive oil (or melted butter). Until a dough forms, stir. Add a bit more flour if the dough is too sticky, and a little more milk if it’s too dry.
Work the dough by kneading it:
- After lightly flouring a spotless surface, knead the dough for one to two minutes, or until it is smooth. Give it ten to fifteen minutes to rest.
Form the bread:
- Form the dough into flat circles that are about 1/2 inch thick after dividing it into 4–6 equal halves.
Stovetop Cooking:
- A skillet should be heated to medium heat. Place the dough rounds in the skillet once it’s heated; you might need to cook them in batches. Put a lid on and heat until golden brown, about 5 to 7 minutes on one side.
- After flipping, cook for a further five to seven minutes, or until the bread is cooked through and the other side is golden brown.
Serve:
- Before serving, take it out of the skillet and let it to cool a little. Savor your warm bread from the stovetop with jam, butter, or your favorite foods!
Advice:
- For added taste, you might incorporate cheese, herbs, or spices into the dough.
- Any bread that is left over can be kept for a few days at room temperature in an airtight container.
Savor the bread you cooked on the stovetop!
