Ingredients:
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
- 4 cups powdered sugar (also known as confectioners’ sugar)
- 2-4 tablespoons heavy cream or milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt (optional, but helps balance the sweetness)
Instructions:
- Beat the Butter:
- In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter with an electric mixer on medium speed for about 3-4 minutes until it’s light and fluffy. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.
- Add Powdered Sugar:
- Gradually add the powdered sugar, one cup at a time, while mixing on low speed. Beat until it is fully incorporated. This step helps avoid a cloud of powdered sugar and ensures a smooth consistency.
- Add Vanilla & Cream:
- Once the sugar is fully mixed in, add the vanilla extract and 2 tablespoons of heavy cream or milk. Increase the speed to medium-high and beat for 3-5 minutes until the frosting is light and fluffy.
- Adjust Consistency:
- If the frosting is too thick, add more heavy cream (1 tablespoon at a time) until you reach the desired consistency. If it’s too thin, add more powdered sugar until it thickens up.
- Optional – Add a Pinch of Salt:
- If you want to cut down on the sweetness and enhance the flavor, add a pinch of salt and mix it in.
- Decorate:
- Your buttercream frosting is now ready to be used! Pipe or spread it onto your cakes, cupcakes, or cookies.
Tips:
- Room Temperature Butter: Ensure the butter is softened at room temperature (but not melted) for the best texture and consistency.
- Flavor Variations: You can infuse different flavors by adding extracts like almond, lemon, or mint, or even adding cocoa powder for chocolate buttercream.
- Coloring: If you want to add color, you can mix in gel food coloring to get vibrant hues without altering the consistency.
This buttercream is perfect for decorating, as it holds its shape well and is incredibly smooth. Enjoy!
