Vegan Tofu Patties

Vegan Tofu Patties

This recipe for vegan tofu patties is tasty and simple. These tasty, crunchy patties are a fantastic complement to any meal and are high in protein. Enjoy them on their own with a salad or a side of vegetables, or serve them in a bun as a vegan burger.

Components:

  1. One block (14 oz) of firm tofu that has been drained and compressed to eliminate extra moisture
  2. Half a cup of breadcrumbs (if gluten-free breadcrumbs are required, use those)
  3. 1/4 cup shredded carrot (optional; adds sweetness and texture)
  4. 1/4 cup of onion, chopped finely
  5. Two teaspoons of nutritional yeast, if desired, to add a cheesy taste
  6. Two minced garlic cloves
  7. One tablespoon of tamari or soy sauce (gluten-free)
  8. One tablespoon of ground flaxseed (for binding, if desired)
  9. One teaspoon of Italian seasoning or dried thyme
  10. Half a teaspoon of optional ground cumin
  11. To taste, add salt and pepper.
  12. Two tablespoons of frying olive oil

Directions:

1. Get the tofu ready:

  • After draining, press the tofu to extract as much moisture as you can. To achieve this, cover the tofu in a fresh kitchen towel and place a heavy object, such as a can, on top of it for ten to fifteen minutes.
  • Press the tofu and use your hands or a fork to crush it into a big dish until it looks like ground meat.

2. Combine the ingredients:

  • To the crumbled tofu, add the breadcrumbs, nutritional yeast, chopped onion, minced garlic, ground flaxseed (if using), thyme, cumin, salt, pepper, and shredded carrot (if used).
  • Mix everything until it’s all properly blended. To make the mixture stick together, add a bit more breadcrumbs if it seems too wet. Add a little water or more soy sauce if it seems too dry.

3. Create the patties:

  • Depending on the desired size of the patties, divide the tofu mixture into 6–8 equal portions.
  • Press the ingredients between your palms to form each part into a patty. The patties should be about 1/2 and 3/4 inches thick, firm but not overly so.

4. Prepare the patties:

  • In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
Carefully set the patties in the skillet while the oil is heated. Cook until golden brown and crispy, about 4–5 minutes per side.
  • To prevent shattering, gently flip the patties. You can keep the cooked patties warm in the oven at 200°F (93°C) while you finish the remaining ones if you’re cooking in batches.

5. Offer:

  • Top the vegan tofu patties with the sauces and toppings of your choice. For a lighter lunch, serve them with a salad or roasted veggies on the side. They also make a delicious burger with lettuce, tomato, pickles, and vegan mayo on a bun.

Advice:

  • Storage: These patties can be frozen for up to a month or kept in the refrigerator for up to three days in an airtight container. For the greatest texture, reheat them in an oven or skillet.
  • Seasoning: You are welcome to change the seasonings to suit your preferences. To change the flavor of the patties, you can add curry powder, smoked paprika, or a little hot sauce.
  • For Baking: Set the oven to 375°F (190°C) if you would like to bake the patties. Put the patties on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, turning them over halfway through, or until they are firm and golden.
