Warm Bread for the Stovetop

Warm Bread for the Stovetop

Ingredients

  1. Two cups of all-purpose flour
  2. One spoonful of baking powder
  3. Half a teaspoon of salt
  4. One tablespoon of optional sugar
  5. Half a cup of water or milk
  6. 1/4 cup of sour cream or plain yoghurt (or any other creamy alternative)
  7. A quarter cup of melted unsalted butter (or veggie oil)
  8. One huge egg

Directions

Get the dough ready:

  • Mix the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar (if using) in a big bowl.
  • Combine the egg, melted butter, yoghurt, and milk in a separate bowl.
  • A soft dough will develop after the wet components are added to the dry ingredients and stirred. A tablespoon at a time, add extra flour if the dough is too sticky.

Work the dough by kneading it:

  • Knead the dough for one to two minutes on a lightly floured board, or until it is smooth. Do not over knead.

Split and Form:

  • The dough should be divided into 6–8 equal pieces. To create spherical discs that are about 1/2 inch thick, shape each piece into a ball and gently flatten.

Warm up the pan:

  • A big skillet or frying pan should be heated to low to medium-low heat. If preferred, you can use oil or butter to lightly coat the pan.

Prepare the bread:

  • Make sure the dough discs are not packed too tightly in the skillet. Cook until golden brown, about 5 to 7 minutes per side.
  • Cook the discs for a further five to seven minutes on the other side, or until they are golden brown and cooked through. To avoid burning, you might need to change the heat.

Chill and serve:

  • After cooking, take the bread out of the skillet and allow it to cool for a few minutes on a wire rack. Warm up and serve with your preferred spread, honey, or butter.

Advice

  • Variations in Flavour: For added flavour, you can incorporate cheese, herbs, or garlic powder into the dough.
  • Storage: Keep any leftovers for up to two days at room temperature in an airtight container. Before serving, reheat in a skillet or microwave.
